The inspiration for Cadet Flipper Class of 1877 is the first African American graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Also, he is the first African American commissioned officer in the U.S. military.

Henry Ossian Flipper was born on March 21,1856 in Thomasville, Georgia. He was the eldest son of Isabelle and Festus Flipper. The Flipper family was enslaved until the end of the Civil War. After the Civil War, his father, an entrepreneur, opened a shoe shop on Decatur Street in Atlanta.  It was in that shop, that Henry first heard about West Point.

I admire Henry’s audacity to attend West Point, he stated that, “…so fully was I determined, so absolutely was my mind set on West Point, that I persisted in my desire even to getting the appointment, staying at the Academy four years, and finally graduating.”  Cadet Flipper was ostracized and disdained by the other cadets, but his perseverance motivates me to this day. His legacy continues to inspire.  Since 1977, West Point has bestowed the Flipper Award to an individual who demonstrates leadership and perseverance while overcoming adversity during the Annual Henry O. Flipper Dinner.

I truly enjoyed creating this artwork. The background in the artwork may be familiar to many that have visited West Point. It is the view from Trophy Point of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains. I captured the mountains, river and sky in tones of blue for its calming nature and not to distract from the primary subject, Cadet Flipper. I attempted to capture him as he looked as a cadet!
