The inspiration for this artwork was the West Point Association of Graduates (WPAOG) alumni building at Herbert Hall.
During plebe year, I recall being in formation and seeing the first snow of the season. I recall thinking how cool it was seeing the white blanket of snow covering everything! Well, I would see many more snowfalls during my four years at West Point. I tried to capture the beauty of the snow on a winter day at Herbert Hall.
The composition of the artwork starts with the background of the U.S. flag to the left of the scene and trees surrounding the Herbert Hall. You notice the floor to ceiling windows that dominate all sides of the building. The West Point Crest reminds you of those three hallowed words, Duty, Honor, Country!
The cadets are walking to a class, practice, or an activity! The Old Grad with his class cap and West Point scarf is being greeted by a West Point staff officer! Maybe, the Old Grad is thinking about plebe year and that first snow of the season?
I want to thank Cadet Israel Dixon, USMA Class of 2024, and Captain Will Ahoua, USMA Class of 2019 for sharing with me the appropriate uniform for the winter weather. Also, I want to thank WPAOG for including my artwork on their 2023 holiday cards.
