The inspiration for the artwork 'Tooth of Time' is the iconic mountain peak at Philmont Scout Ranch.   The Tooth of Time, an elevation of 9,003 feet, is one of Philmont's most popular sights.  In the 1800's, traders would see the prominent 'tooth-like peak' and knew that the 'time' to Santa Fe, New Mexico was seven days!

I recall hiking at Philmont with my son's scout crew.  The Philmont experience is a crew completing several days of hiking, activities, and camping.  It is challenging for both youth and adults! The biggest challenge is getting everyone to perform as an effective crew.  I recall the moment that I knew that our crew became cohesive. We had to make a decision on how to traverse a mountain, we could take the winding long route and miss the sunset or we could climb over rocks, up the face of the mountain, and be able to see the sunset. To my surprise, the scouts chose the shorter route. As I was climbing hand over foot up the mountain with a forty - pound backpack, I was questioning the wisdom of their decision. All of the sudden, I realized that the scouts were laughing and joking every inch of the climb! I started laughing and the weight of the backpack magically disappeared! We made it to the top of the peak to see a beautiful sunset! That day, we became a cohesive crew!

The most challenging aspect of this artwork was capturing the forest contours.  As I looked at the scene, I noticed different tones of green as you approach the peaks.  I attempted to capture the stoneface of the Tooth and surrounding peaks with a few firm bush strokes to capture the strength of the peaks.  The idyllic clouds provide the balance for the scene.
