The inspiration for the artwork 'You Made It' is the arch that welcomes you back to base camp after hiking over the Tooth of Time at Philmont.
I recall how our crew, comprised of adult advisors and scouts, practiced backpacking in preparation for our Philmont trek. Upon our arrival at Philmont, we were excited to finally test our preparation. Yes, there was a little trepidation - were we ready to meet the Philmont challenge? Over the next twelve days, our bodies, minds, and spirits would be tested as we hiked approximately 70 miles over the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains.
The last day of our trek, we hiked over the Tooth Ridge Trail and could see base camp in the distance. As we continued on the trail, in the distance we could see a wooden arch. We, like so many crews before and after us, appreciated those words, 'Welcome Back - You Made It' - our preparation passed the test!
The most challenging aspect of this artwork was capturing the wooden arch. As I looked at the scene, I noticed the different tones of the wood supports and the sign. I attempted to capture the serenity of the scout as the trek is coming to an end. The U.S. flag, which is given to the crew leader at the beginning of the trek, is waving in the breeze. The idyllic clouds provide the balance for the scene.
